Values change and social transformation

Can values change, and what psychological conditions make value change possible?

This idea connects personal transformation with social transformation. If values are partly sustained by identity, consistency pressures, social roles, and group norms, then deep change may require more than information. It may require new identities, practices, relationships, institutions, or experiences of meaning.

Possible study designs:

  • Study when people revise moral, political, or life values after meaningful experiences.
  • Test whether identity-safe contexts make value change less threatening.
  • Compare informational, relational, experiential, and contemplative pathways to value change.
  • Examine whether expanded identity increases commitment to collective or “greater good” action.

Key risks:

  • Value change can be ethically sensitive if framed as persuasion or conversion.
  • Short-term attitude change should not be mistaken for deep value change.
